The British Columbia Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) governs how private sector organizations in BC collect, use, and disclose personal information.
PIPA is BC's private sector privacy law. It sets the rules for collecting, using, and disclosing personal information in the course of business in the province.
It is substantially similar to PIPEDA and requires knowledge and consent, limited collection, accuracy, safeguards, openness, individual access, and accountability.
Breaches must be reported to the BC OIPC when there is a real risk of significant harm.
